About Us…

Catskill Choral Society – 2014

We were established  as The Community Chorale in 1970 and received 502(c)(3) status in 1974. We are  a Type [B] Corporation as set forth in the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law of New York State, and are organized exclusively for one or more of the purposes specified in Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue  Code of the United States.

CCS is constituted as a voluntary association whose purpose is to provide opportunities for its Members to perform choral music from all periods and styles. With funds raised through dues, ticket sales, and other activities, the Society provides professional artistic direction and support for concerts of the highest artistic merit which enrich and challenge its singing members and enhance the musical life of the communities in which they perform.

The group has performed a variety of works over the years, running the gamut from what may have been the earliest American oratorio Jonah (1775), by Samuel Felsted (1743?–1802) to Tom Johnson’s Bonhoeffer Oratorio, written between 1988 and 1992, in minimalist style.

In addition to our local venues (Oneonta, Cooperstown, Walton), the group has performed in a variety of other venues in New York (Albany, Schenectady, Syracuse, Binghamton, New York City), in Boston, and in several European venues (Prague, Salzburg and others). We have performed with the Syracuse Symphony, Schenectady Symphony, Catskill Symphony, and Albany Pro Musica. Our 70+ singers come from Otsego, Delaware and Chenango Counties of central New York.

About our youth programs

In addition to our concerts, the Society runs several programs for local youths:

  • CCS Youth and Children’s choirs are open to children from 6 to 14, and focuses on age appropriate musical and vocal training.  These groups perform as part of the society’s concert cycles.
  • The Dox Apprentice program is open by audition to sophomores, juniors, and seniors in high school.  Apprentices sing as members of the Society and receive private lessons with various professional vocal coaches in our area.
